On April 17, 2020, we got to know the results of the EIT Health COVID-19 Rapid Response competition, the aim of which was to select the best innovative projects in the European arena focused on fighting the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic.

We are pleased to announce that the Medical University of Lodz is the only one among EIT Health Innostars that has received funding for the implementation of the „Ultrasonographic Lung Simulator” project. The project is the result of many years of cooperation between the Center for Innovation and Technology Transfer and Medical Simulation Technologies (https://mstech.eu/).

The collaboration will result in the creation of an interactive lung ultrasound simulator available on the Internet.

Widely available lung ultrasound in the hands of trained physicians may speed up the diagnosis of lung pathology in patients presenting to hospital with non-specific symptoms that may result from coronavirus infection. Early identification of people at risk of infection of other patients and medical staff, isolate them and prioritize PCR testing for SARS-COV-2. In patients with confirmed infection, trained physicians can monitor lung changes using ultrasound, assessing the likelihood of worsening and selecting patients who should be carefully monitored for the risk of developing respiratory failure. On the other hand, it is possible to monitor the treatment process by evaluating pathology resolution by ultrasound.

All of the above tasks require training, which can be widely carried out thanks to the simulator.
